BTC has turned defensive after rejecting sharply from 64,000 in yesterday's New York session and losing the 63,000 support, which failed to hold on the retest. Price is drifting lower and still searching for a floor through the London session, heading toward 62,500, the level where buyers stepped in two weeks ago to escape the descending channel and the shelf the whole recovery was built on. How price reacts there decides whether the breakout holds or fully unwinds.
The levels have turned against buyers. Price spent this week capped by the rolling 30-day VWAP and is now poised to retest the monthly low; failing under that VWAP all week left buyers without a foothold, and a retest of the monthly low is where the range either holds or breaks. On the profile, price is retesting July's value area low, the level that held two weeks ago on the last pullback, but a second visit so soon leaves it more vulnerable, and losing it opens the lower half of the range as the next reference. Positioning is tilting bearish but unconfirmed: price is drifting down to threaten long positioning below 62,000, with open interest climbing while perp CVD falls pointing to fresh shorts, though climbing spot CVD at the same time means that short push is not yet confirmed by spot flow.
The backdrop is a mix of firming policy and softening data. The Clarity Act stalled, but the regulatory picture keeps improving, with the CFTC taking up clarity on August 20th and the White House hosting crypto and prediction-market executives next Wednesday; offsetting that, MSCI is threatening to drop Strategy, MetaPlanet, and other treasury firms from major equity indexes, and miners keep selling Bitcoin treasuries to fund a pivot into AI compute. On the macro side, US retail sales posted their first decline in nine months and Michigan consumer sentiment came in soft, the first real signs the consumer is cooling, with housing starts Tuesday and inflation and GDP Wednesday next week. Tactical reads: holding 62,500 keeps the breakout and the range alive; losing it and the sub-62,000 long liquidity opens the lower half of the range as the next downside test.
